Welcome to Polarity Therapy

“True health is the harmony of life within us…”

-Dr. Randolph Stone, DO, DC, Polarity Therapy Founder

Polarity Therapy is a unique wellness practice that involves touch.  It was developed by Dr. Randolph Stone, (1889-1981), an Osteopathic physician and Chiropractor with a passion for natural healing.  Unlike massage or physical therapy, whose purpose is relaxation, or re-educating the body to align with gravity, the purpose of Polarity Therapy is personal transformation.   It is realigning the body to be in harmony with the soul.   This somatic therapy enables you to look at what you’re carrying in your body as a blueprint for your life.  It’s said your body is a reflection of your thoughts, your beliefs, your emotions and experience.  Polarity Therapy is a chance to release your buried treasures… to open up the obstructions, the blockages, the pain, the difficulties, the distortions in the body.

It’s a chance for you to start to say, how is this a reflection of what’s happening in my life? And how can I bring resolution and freedom to my body, in order to bring resolution and freedom to my life?  In addition to working with the body, the Practitioner supports you with verbal communication and reflective listening.  You are guided into greater awareness, and have space to re-negotiate what you’re holding onto and what you can let go of.   Additional resources for nutrition, exercises and lifestyle deepen the process of transformation if you choose to take advantage of them.  Polarity Therapy is a truly holistic practice … it can work for anyone, in any state of health:  it meets you where you are at, and inspires positive changes that are just right for you.

Polarity Therapy offers an extraordinary experience of life energy. Underlying our physiology and our human condition, there are creative forces which sustain us and our health.  This ‘Breath of Life,’ is called by many names in different traditions… for example chi in Chinese Medicine, or prana in Ayurveda … Spiritus Sanctus in Christianity and ruach in Hebrew.  Nearly every spiritual system acknowledges this universal energy.  When life energy is blocked, we experience pain, disease, or stress.    The term Polarity refers to a quality of balance … represented by the Yin-Yang symbol … where life energy is flowing.  In this state, we experience a definite sense of wellbeing, freedom from pain, and clarity of mind;   it encourages restoration of normal functioning so that the body can use its own intelligence to heal itself.

Where are you feeling stuck, in pain, or imbalanced?

Polarity Therapy helps you get moving in a positive direction.

A significant part of Polarity Therapy is wellness education and self-empowerment— learning to take greater control of your own health…  harnessing your renewed energy to create the life you want.   Are you ready for positive changes?  Polarity Therapy awakens vitality.  It’s about saying “I will not settle.  I’m not going to live a limited, constricted life.” As you free up limitations in yourself, you open space for more of your true self to shine through.  What a gift:  to feel more alive, with a sense of purpose, moving forward on a path towards wellness.

I have studied and experienced a wide variety of somatic therapies and believe everyone can benefit from Polarity Therapy.

Polarity Therapy is the missing link in health care. It truly recognizes the integrated nature of a person and provides an effective way of restoring harmony and coherence.

In a Polarity Therapy Session you enter a sacred space where you can share whatever is going on with you without judgment.  It is a welcoming atmosphere where the practitioner seeks to receive and appreciate you for who you truly are.  Each session begins with an intake – it’s a chance to express what you hope to gain out of the session, and share any personal or health history that feels important.   No two Polarity Therapy sessions are the same– the practitioner responds dynamically to whatever your needs are on a given day, and each client-practitioner relationship is unique.  On the bodywork table, constrictions and stress in the body, mind, and emotions give way to a deeper peace.  You come into a clearer sense of connection with your whole self.   The Practitioner is trained to work verbally with you if emotions arise, to help you stay present with whatever you’re feeling.  The end of the session is spent discussing your experience, and additional resources you can take advantage of between sessions.  The session often has ripple effects that can positively impact you for days or weeks afterwards.

It’s important to choose a Practitioner who is right for you; the rapport that is established between you and your Practitioner becomes the foundation for healing.   As the relationship develops over time, it enables you to go deeper into your journey toward wellness.  Board Certified Polarity Practitioners (BCPPs) undergo extensive training, clinical supervision, and pass a Board Exam.  Search the APTA Membership Directory for a Practitioner in your area.

“Health is not merely of the body.  It is the natural expression of the body, mind and soul when they are in rhythm with the One Life.  True health is the harmony of life within us, consisting of peace of mind, happiness and well-being.  It is not merely a question of physical fitness, but is rather a result of the soul finding free expression through the mind and body of the individual.”

-Dr. Randolph Stone, DO, DC, Polarity Therapy Founder

Polarity Therapy takes a different approach to health than many people are accustomed to.  Even in the most dire conditions – whether physiological or psychological – deeper forces are at work within us seeking a state of balance.  Polarity Therapy taps into this healing intelligence, and encourages it.  Polarity Practitioners do not diagnose or treat illnesses; rather they assess where you are out of balance energetically, and support you coming back into balance naturally.  Polarity Therapy is enjoyed by individuals in good health as preventative care, and by those living with chronic or acute issues who need support.  It provides tools for health-building and self-care, to whatever degree you choose to take advantage of them.  It is not intended as a replacement for other forms of therapy or healthcare, but works in an integrative fashion to help the individual experience greater wholeness.

The best way to learn about Polarity Therapy is to experience a session in person. It is the only way to gain a real sense of how this unique practice can uplift and support you. The effectiveness of Polarity Therapy expands over the course of multiple sessions, as you and your practitioner get to know each other better, so it is recommended you try more than one session if possible. Polarity Therapy was developed by Dr. Randolph Stone, doctor of Osteopathy, Naturopathy and Chiropractic, over a period of 60 years of practice and study which began in 1912 and ended with his retirement at age 83. It represents a synthesis of the health wisdom from the West and the East, where Dr. Stone studied homeopathy, Chinese Acupuncture, the Aryuvedic system of India and folk health practices of many cultures. From these systems he extracted the essential principles of healing and incorporated them into a simple, clear and universally applicable approach to natural healthcare called Polarity Therapy. Many of Dr. Stone's writings are published online and available for free at www.digitaldrstone.com. The American Polarity Therapy Association (APTA) was founded in 1984 to carry on Dr. Stone's teachings and work. It sets standards for education and practice, and is the only agency to certify Polarity Practitioners.

What's the difference between Polarity Therapy and Massage Therapy?

  • Although it takes place on a massage table, the scope and intention of Polarity Therapy is entirely different from Massage.
  • Polarity Therapy uses Energetic Touch to help balance your energy.  Physical technique is in service of mental-emotional and spiritual health, and is often accompanied by verbal communication.
  • A Polarity Practitioner is trained in advanced communication skills, to guide you into a better awareness of yourself, and support you through whatever needs to be processed mentally-emotionally during a session.  This is entirely different from massage, which is focused on the physical realm alone.
  • The client remains clothed.  There is no oil or lotion involved.
  • In Polarity Therapy a practitioner’s hands can rest gently on the head, feet, body for long periods of time.
  • The focus of Polarity Therapy is energy balancing.  The practitioner’s presence, awareness and focus facilitates healing as much as specific hands-on techniques.
  • Use of communication, diet and energy exercises are part of Polarity Therapy, but not massage.

APTA opposes the classification of Polarity Therapy as a Massage Modality, or any regulation which demands a Massage Education to practice Polarity Therapy.  For further exploration of the differences between Polarity Therapy and Massage Therapy, see the Legislation Page in the APTA section of this website.

How deep is the pressure? What techniques are used?

Polarity Therapy involves light, medium and deep pressure contacts, as well as gentle stretching and rocking. There are also moments of stillness with almost no pressure — which can help you deepen into relief and relaxation.

How many sessions do I need?

The number of sessions and duration of treatment depends entirely on you – how far and how deep you want to go in your healing journey.  Some clients feel immediate impact from a single session and get all they need out of it.  They might come just a single time, or come periodically when they feel like it.  Others engage in Polarity Therapy over a period of time that might last for weeks, months or years.  You’re welcome to take a break or stop anytime, and also welcome to return if you feel like it anytime.  People tend to stay in the therapy as long as they continue to experience benefits from the work.

How do I find the right practitioner for me?

While all Board Certified Polarity Practitioners use similar techniques, their individual styles can vary greatly. Many practitioners combine their Polarity Practice with other complementary or mainstream healing, so you may find Polarity Practitioners who also are doctors, nurses, psychotherapists, yoga teachers, or craniosacral practitioners. Ultimately you want to find a practitioner with whom you feel a good connection and whose work feels like it is helping you make progress toward your goals.

You can search for a practitioner in APTA’s member directory here.

Do I need to believe in something or have some spirituality for this to work?

No.  You don’t need to believe in anything in order to enjoy Polarity Therapy and reap its benefits.  This therapy is not aligned with any religion or spiritual discipline, though it will complement a spiritual practice if you have one.  Polarity Therapy is based on the science of energy dynamics and transcends any particular creed.

Is Polarity Therapy accepted by the Medical Community?

Polarity Therapy is classified as a biofield therapy by the medical and scientific community; biofield therapies are gaining increasing acceptance in mainstream healthcare as more scientific evidence accumulates about their effectiveness. Polarity Therapy is one of many methods of natural healing which are becoming more mainstream, such as Yoga, Meditation, Acupuncture, and other kinds of somatic therapy.  Polarity Practitioners welcome cooperation with mainstream healthcare providers, and psychotherapists, doctors and chiropractors currently refer patients to Polarity Practitioners.

What Can I Expect To Happen To Me After a Session?

Healing processes are initiated in a session, and sometimes they complete themselves in the hours or even days after a session.  Your body and mind may take time to integrate the effects of the healing.  It’s important to give yourself plenty of space for rest, hydration, and self-care.

APTA’s standards of practice and Board Certification help insure you receive care from a competent, qualified practitioner.
